Eternal Truths And Promotional Products

Slut Walk

There is a lot one can learn from one’s own mistakes. It is an eternal truth that it is a lot less painful if one learns from the mistakes of others. A simple slip of the tongue can prove very embarrassing as well as start an international movement and provide opportunities for promotional products.

We owe police constable Michael Sanguinetti of Toronto Police Department a debt as he has reminded us of some other eternal truths. He gave a talk on health and safety to students at a law school in Toronto. According to reports, see www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-13320785, he said: “I’ve been told I’m not supposed to say this. However, women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimised.”

As you have no doubt already worked out, Michael’s comments created something of a furore. However, we can learn from his mistakes. What can deduce that:

  • Before you make that off the cuff statement run it past someone whom you can blame if it all goes wrong;
  • If you are not supposed to say something then it is probably a good idea not to say it;
  • It is a best not to say something controversial in front of lawyers. This is especially so for trainee lawyers;
  • It is best not to say something that could be interpreted as an attack on female rights in front of lawyers. This is especially true for trainee lawyers and doubly so for female ones.

The comments have generated a series of ‘SlutWalks’ in North America, demonstrations highlighting concern about apparent attitudes in Toronto police. Student rep, Darkshika Selvasivam, who was not present at the meeting, suggested she was shocked upon hearing the comment, the one she didn’t hear.

There are some opportunities for promotional products, such as an umbrella or two, to show your support for the students’ concerns should the movement, as promised, make its way across the Atlantic. Failing that you should remember that the problem with eternal truths is that they have been around for ages and there is no excuse for ignoring them.
