A Short History of the Stress Ball
The concept of relieving stress through ones hands in an ancient one. It dates right back to 1368 A.D, during the Ming Dynasty in China, when baoding balls (or Chinese health balls) were first in use. The solid metal balls, which usually come in pairs, were designed to be repetitively rotated in the palm of the hand. The idea was that the weight of the balls would stimulate the hand’s pressure points, relieving tension. You can still buy baoding balls today, although they are now more commonly made of chrome with tiny chimes inside.

Fascinating Facts About Stress

  • The term ‘stress’ derives from the Latin ‘stringere’ mean ‘to draw tight’.
  • The top five most stressful jobs are enlisted military personnel, military general, fire fighter, commercial airline pilot and public relations executive.
  • The top three stressful countries to live in are Nigeria, South Africa and El Salvador.
  • While it is a myth that stress can turn hair grey, stress can cause hair loss. In fact, telogen effluvium (hair loss) can begin up to three months after a stressful event.

How Modern Stress Balls Are Made
Promotional stress balls are made from polyurethane (PU), which starts off in liquid form and is then poured into moulds of two halves. The filled moulds are heated to ‘set’ the PU, which, once cool, is removed from the moulds to be finished. This involves trimming, spraying and applying the print. All items are given a final quality check before being individually polybagged.

Selecting Your Shape, Colour and Branding
The stress toy is the seventh most popular corporate giveaway (according to the BPMA), with the most frequently requested shape being the traditional ball. We hold plain stock of all the most popular styles, ensuring we are able to offer fast lead times for last minute orders.

However, if you require full colour printing, this will be done using transfers that are heat applied by hand in the Far East and will take approximately four weeks.

We can also produce stress toys in specific pantone colours, providing the quantity is over five hundred units. An extended lead time would also be applicable.

If you would like to take advantage of our bespoke stress toy manufacturing service, we can produce a one-off mould for £350. Lead time is approximately six to 10 weeks from artwork approval. Call us on 0800 169 0898 for further details.
