Where Does Leather Come From?
Leather is the tanned hide/skin of any animal. Leather can be made from cows, pigs, goats, sheep, and many more exotic animals, but most leather products are made from cowhides. The majority of leather comes from developing countries such as India and China. According to the All India Skin and Hide Tanners and Merchants Association, exports of leather and leather products from India are worth $5.75 billion each year. The biggest markets for leather are Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia, the US and the UK. Tamil Nadu is the capital of India's leather industry, accounting for 40-45 per cent of production.

More Unusual Leathers
Any animal with a skin can be made into leather. Here are some of the more unusual:

Fish – Salmon, perch, cod, sturgeon, eel, tilapia, stingray and shark are all popular fish skins.

Deer and Elk – A tough leather historically used by indigenous Americans and still used for coats, work gloves and slippers.

Exotic – Alligator, crocodile, ostrich, snake and lizard are some of the most expensive types of leather, mostly used for shoes, belts and handbags.

Human – Even human skin can be made into leather! A small number of companies make leather products using human skin, which has been bequeathed by people (usually in exchange for monetary compensation for surviving family members). It is extremely expensive, with a wallet starting from US$14,000.
