Promotional travel mugs are one of our most popular corporate gifts. We offer vacuum and insulated models helping keep your clients’ drinks at just the right temperature. Travel mugs provide a generous branding area and, as an item which is used outside the home, offer the added advantage of wide exposure for your brand.

A Short History of The Travel Mug

The technology behind thermal travel mugs was invented by the Scottish chemist and physicist Sir James Dewar in 1892. It was one of many important discoveries he made; he was the first person to produce hydrogen in liquid form and to solidify it, and went on to invent a machine for producing liquid oxygen in quantity. The development of the ‘Dewar flask’ (or thermos flask, as we call it today) was not to store hot liquids such as tea and coffee, but to aid the chemist in his work with liquid gases.

A Dewar Flask is constructed from two glass or metal bottles, one inside the other, separated by a vacuum. Heat can't conduct through the vacuum, so the liquid inside remains cold (or hot).
Unfortunately for Dewar, he never filed a patent for his invention and in 1904 the idea was commercially exploited by the German company, Thermos. Thermos was a brand name for many years, but in 1963 it was declared a ‘generalized trademark’ in the United States and is now used by many companies.

Travel Mugs – Plastic vs Stainless Steel

True thermos mugs have a stainless steel construction, which utilises the same technology as thermos flasks. They are equipped with thermo efficient screw-on plastic tops, and a drinking spout for ease of use. A metal thermos mug will be more effective in keeping liquid cold or hot than a plastic mug. Some models can be printed with up to four colours, while others may only be printed with one colour. The mugs themselves come in a variety of different colours and start from £3.16 (minimum order of 50 pieces).

Plastic travel mugs work in a similar way to true thermos mugs, with a double wall construction, but use an insulating material (or just air) instead of a vacuum. They advantage of a plastic travel mug is it is more durable and cheaper. Plastic models are still very effective at maintaining their content’s temperature. Your logo can be printed on in up to four colours.
